It talks to the idea that traditional cartooning “is one of the most savage markets around.” In order to enter the market, you have to cater to a highly developed niche (sense of humor). And most people won’t get it but a tiny number of people will find it screamingly funny.

I think he is right. As far as industry trends go, things are getting much harder for market entrants and markets are polar by nature. Finding the early adaptors and consumer evangelists for your product/ service if you are a start-up means going to extremes. The only issue, of course is crossing the chasm. While individuals and potentially very small businesses can thrive on the edge, most companies need to grow beyond the niche to thrive.
